The complement system, also known as complement cascade, is a part of the immune system that enhances (complements) the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microbes and damaged cells from an organism, promote inflammation, and attack the pathogen's cell membrane. The complement cascade is a network of plasma proteins and cell surface receptors that recognize non-self-components and triggers one of the three pathways. The complement cascade is tightly controlled to protect host cells from indiscriminate attack. Complement inhibitors include the plasma serine proteinase inhibitor serpin (C1 inactivator). The plasma proteins, Factor I and C4 binding protein (C4-bp), inhibit the activity of the classical C3 convertase. Most of the proteins are normally inactive, but in response to the recognition of molecular components of microorganisms they become sequentially activated in an enzyme cascade – the activation of one protein enzymatically cleaves and activates the next protein in the cascade.
